Large School Boiler Breakdown!

The Challenge

A new customer came to us needing an urgent school heating hire solution. Their existing boiler on site had broken down, meaning that the entire school had no heating in the depths of winter. Luckily this occurred during half term (albeit the end of the week); meaning we had just the weekend to get a solution in place for the pupils return on the Monday morning.

The failed boiler was essential as it heated the whole school. So a large heating hire package was required to be effectively to provide heating for this school site, with around 1000 members of staff and pupils attending.

Additionally, we had to find the right location for the package to adhere to the health and safety regulations of the school, keeping the children safely as our main priority when looking at placement of our units.

Container Boiler Hire

The Solution

Within 24 hours of the initial enquiry, we had our engineer on site conducting a free site survey to determine the best package, but also one which could be implemented quickly and efficiently.

The site survey established that our containerised 600kW boiler would be the best option; a powerful boiler solution which could heat the whole school as a direct temporary replacement for their existing boiler whilst works are carried out. The additional benefit to using the containerised boiler package was the added safety whilst in a school environment, as the whole boiler is not accessible and locked inside the container. We also used heras fencing to add an additional safety aspect to the install.

After a Friday afternoon breakdown, we were able to get the temporary boiler ready and delivered onto site on the Saturday morning. This allowed us to unload, install and commission the equipment all before children returned to the school on the Monday morning.

We were able to find the perfect spot for the boiler; not only did we have the safety of the containerised unit and heras fencing, we placed the equipment in a secluded area at the back of the school safely out of sight. We then ran the hoses up the side of the school into the plant room through the roof, ensuring we mitigated the trip hazards for pupils, staff and parents.

The Result

When the enquiry came through we knew it was imperative to act quickly to get the a boiler package in place before school resumed after half term. We smashed it – 48 hours from the initial conversation! Moving quickly, to ensure it was all up and running correctly for the frosty start to the year to the staff and pupils; whilst also ensuring that the boiler caused no safety hazards for the school.

“Great work by the team, fully supported by the office enabled us to quickly turn this around and get it to site, with the boiler still there now providing heating for the school!” – Anthony Jeffers

Cooling and Heating Hire in the Education Sector

From keeping classrooms warm during a boiler breakdown in the middle of winter, to providing cooling solutions for summer exams, we understand the critical impact of temperature control on student and staff wellbeing. The School Premises (England) Regulations 2012 does not specify minimum temperatures for any parts of a school, however the National Education Union’s position is that temperatures in school classrooms should be at least 18ºC (64.4ºF). Schools also have a duty of care, so it’s important students, staff and parents/guardians are kept informed of any emergency temperature control situations and that the issues are resolved in a safe, timely manner.

Unexpected heating or cooling failures often occur within educational buildings and these can disrupt daily operations and learning environments, which is why Celsius Hire provides rapid emergency response solutions, delivering boilers, chillers, fan coils, AHUs and all accompanying ancillaries to restore conditions quickly.  Our industrial-scale heating and cooling solutions cater to a variety of needs, including being able to provide suitable comfort heating for multiple classrooms within a temporary structure, to supplying temporary hot water throughout a college.

We also work with facilities management teams and local authorities to develop contingency plans, ensuring schools, colleges and universities are prepared for any situation. And with tight budget allocations to work with, hiring equipment can save on expenditure, resources and time.

Applications include;

  • Comfort heating for classrooms, lecture halls, and temporary structures
  • Temporary systems for construction or renovation projects
  • Emergency boilers for heating and hot water supply
  • Fan coils providing the ability to adjust temperatures as needed (these units requires a chilled or hot water source to its coil)
